The End (Blog #10)

 My biggest takeaway from the semester is that there is no “right way” to use informational technology in the school library. There are so many options and resources available that fit a myriad of situations. Knowing the audience and understanding the needs of the school community were prevalent themes throughout the semester. These are some things we will need to consider:  

  • What age will we work with? 
  • What is the makeup of our community? 
  • What is our budget? 
  • What teacher collaborators are available? 
  • What resources are already there?  
  • What time is available for implementation?  

This class is important in that respect because most of us do not yet know what our library situation will be. Being able to explore a variety of materials and resources that are applicable to a multitude of environments has been so helpful.  

 

Here are a few favorite resources I discovered this semester:  

  • National School Library Standards/ISTE standards crosswalk document 
  • Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship curriculum 
  • Digital curation platforms (particularly Wakelet!) 
  • Cyberbullying.org 
  • The Compassionate Maker & Renovated Learning blogs

INQUIRE Interview

       My first interview was with a practicing librarian of nine years. She has worked in se veral schools, but in her current position for two years . Ms. P teaches at a Title 1 elementary school in a suburb of Columbia, SC , with about 560 students in grades 4K-5 th .    The following questions guided our discussion:    1 .  What are some of the ways that you implement the “inquire” foundation into your library program?    a. National School Library Standards vs. ISTE Standards (Blog #1)

     All things considered, the National School Library (NSL) standards and the International S o ci ety for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards are quite complementary of each other. Although the ISTE standards (2016) focus specifically  on technology, they can easily be used to implement  the goals of the NSL standards. The foundation of the two sets of standards is similar. They both encourage  educators to help students   take charge of the inquiry process in an authentic way .
